Woman of the year
Zanzibar 2022
2022 award
Ceremony
The award ceremony for Women of the year 2022 was held at our partner hotel, Zanzibar Serena Hotel.
It was an amazing evening where we witnessed the Minister of Community development, Gender and Children, Riziki Pembe Juma hand out the prize to the winner of the award: Hafsa Mbamba.
Roughly 100 select guests were invited to attend the ceremony, and to honor the outstanding accomplishments of Hafsa Mbamba.
The event was filled with passion and was a great arena for several speakers to voice important themes for the future of Zanzibar in front of both guests and attending press: The minister Riziki held an igniting speech expressing the importance of women and leadership, and also expressed the importance of the project, which was returned with a roaring applause.
Dr. Irmelin Drake spoke passionately about the importance of leadership and rolemodels for further development and equality. The Project Leader, Florence Riwa gave a well worded retelling of how the jury and the future work for equality will be organized trough 2023 until the next Award in January 2024.

WOMAN OF THE YEAR WINNER 2019
AISHA BAKARY
In 2019, woman of the year, Zanzibar was initiated, awarding Aisha Bakary to be Woman of the Year. In 2019, she was the first female DJ in Zanzibar, working under the name of The Hijab DJ. Succeeding in a male dominated profession, she serves as a great inspiration. The media attention and commitment was substantial in the aftermath of the nomination, and among other things she was portrayed in a documentary by the BBC.
We are now looking forward to The DJ Hijab coming to play at this year’s award.
